The ‘Great War’ War and inter-war period 1914 – 1939
The peace shattered in 1914 when war broke out and men were needed to fight.
Many came forward from Shillington to do their duty but some perished in battle and never returned.
Like all wars, everyone expected that it would soon be over but it lingered on for four long years. When the men returned, jobs were in short supply but bikes, buses and cars enabled some to find them elsewhere. In the 1930s, piped water and electricity reached Shillington but the decade ended with war becoming inevitable once more.
