Georgian Britain 1714 – 1837

Several disasters struck during the 1700s and life was particularly tough for some. Maps were published and added to our knowledge of the area. Big farmers lobbied to get rid of the open fields and commons and have exclusive use of their own land. They succeeded but it came at a cost to smaller farmers and the landscape began to change. Dissent swelled among the poor and troubled broke out in the early 1800s.

King George III had a keen interest in agriculture. He was nicknamed ‘Farmer George.’

He surely would have approved of Shillington’s agrarian economy!
