The end of the war led to no sudden changes for most although women who had taken on essential work let, sometimes reluctantly, the returning servicemen go back to their old jobs.
The war delayed social improvements but in 1948, the NHS was set up and enabled the poor to get healthcare when they needed it.
In the 50s, the country slowly shook off poverty and entered a new period of rising aspirations and consumerism.
New housing improved living conditions and brought newcomers to Shillington from the 1960s onwards. The village would never be the same again.
